In this article, I’ll explore what is preconditioning is, and the reasons why it might be failing. I’ll also arm you with practical tips to overcome any obstacles you might be facing.

    So, if you’re tired of stepping into a cold or sweltering car, look no further. Get ready to discover the solutions that will bring back the convenience and comfort of preconditioning your Renault Zoe.

    Understanding Preconditioning

    Before we dive into the specifics, let’s understand what is preconditioning and how it works.

    Preconditioning is a feature in the Renault Zoe (and other electric vehicles) that allows you to keep a comfortable temperature in your car. This way, you avoid having it too cold or too hot.

    Here’s how it works: Around 30 mins ahead of your trip, you can start preconditioning (in the car or remotely). This way, when you hit the road, the car is already at a perfect temperature.

    If your car is plugged in while preconditioning, it uses power from the charging station instead of using up the battery. This means you can have a full battery when you start your trip. You can leave your battery power to drive instead of making the car warm or cool.

    The problem is: sometimes preconditioning fails.

    Let’s explore some of the reasons why this might happen and what you can do to fix them.

    Common Renault Zoe Preconditioning Issues

    1. Check the Battery Level

    Checking your Zoe’s battery is the easiest and most obvious troubleshooting tip, so make sure to address it first.

    Did you know that preconditioning is connected to how much battery power your car has? It’s important to have at least 45% of battery, whether you have it plugged into a charging station or not, as per Renault’s guidelines.

    The reason is simple: preconditioning needs that battery power to work properly. So, if you’re having issues with preconditioning, the first thing to check is your car’s battery level.

    If you find that your battery is below 45%, don’t worry! Simply give it a little charge, and then you’ll be good to go with preconditioning. It’s always a good idea to keep an eye on your battery level to ensure your Renault Zoe is ready for a comfortable and energy-efficient drive.

    2. Check The Connection To Your Car

    You can trigger preconditioning in two ways.

    The first is through the key fob, by pressing the preconditioning button, as shown in the picture. If you’re doing this but preconditioning is not starting, assess the situation.

    Are you close enough to your vehicle?

    You need to be close enough just so the key fob can pass the message to the car that it needs to start preconditioning.

    But there’s a more comfortable way to activate preconditioning, which is the way I always go about it. You can open the Renault app on your phone and click the “Start” button. It’s that simple!

    Press ” Start ” On the Renault app to start preconditioning immediately. You can also schedule it on the app.

    For this to work, you need to make sure you have Internet on your phone and that the signal is not weak or unstable. This way, your phone can communicate with your car and get preconditioning started.

    So, if you’re facing intermittent issues with preconditioning, check your internet connection. Make sure you have a strong and stable Wi-Fi or cellular signal. Moving closer to your router or going to an area with better network coverage can make a big difference.

    3. Are Your Temperature Sensors Faulty?

    Preconditioning drives the car temperature to around 20–21ºC. But how does your car know the temperature inside it? Through temperature sensors! These sensors measure the temperature, allowing the climate control system to work magic during preconditioning.

    But if the temperature readings are incorrect, the climate control system won’t know how to adjust and keep the desired temperature.

    An easy way to troubleshoot this is to see the temperature displayed on your car’s screen. If it’s very off from the temperature you’re feeling, the sensors are most likely off and need repairing.

    To properly diagnose and fix the issue, it’s best to have the car checked by a qualified technician. They’ll have the expertise and tools to fix the sensors.

    4. Check the Climate Settings

    Finally, let’s look at the climate control settings on your car.

    You can schedule preconditioning directly on the car’s dashboard. You set your desired time for preconditioning to start, and once that time arrives, the car’s temperature starts regulating.

    But there is a little caveat that can cause issues. Your car needs to have the right time set. For example, you might be scheduling the preconditioning to start at, let’s imagine, 7 am. But if your car has the wrong time, it will start preconditioning at 7 am, its (wrong) time. 

    So just do a quick check on your car’s time and, if it’s off, set it correctly.
