    Key Takeaways

    • Genesis is finalizing a deal to purchase electric motors from Lucid Motors for their upcoming electric vehicles.
    • Lucid’s motors are known for power and range, making them a valuable addition to the Genesis lineup.
    • The Genesis X Concept electric convertible is expected to be powered by Lucid’s motors and go on sale in 2026.

South Korean automaker Genesis already builds some of the industry’s top electric vehicles with 800-volt charging, competitive range, and thrilling performance. But why settle for having one of the best EVs when you can borrow from the best in terms of range and performance? A new report from South Korean outlet Sisa Journal claims that Genesis is finalizing a deal to purchase electric motors from American EV brand Lucid Motors.

Adding some credence to this rumor, Hyundai Motor Company CEO Jang Jae-hoon was reportedly spotted visiting Lucid’s headquarters in Newark, California earlier this year. The Lucid Air and the upcoming Lucid Gravity have also been spotted testing in South Korea. When asked for comment on the meeting, a Hyundai spokesperson said, “I can’t confirm it.”

“President Jang sent a photo taken with Lucid Donckerwolke, Hyundai COO, and Lucid officials, and reported details of the business trip to Hyundai Motor Group Chairman, Chung Eui-sun. It was an opportunity to discuss related cooperation,” an industry insider close to Hyundai told Sisa Journal.

    Genesis

Genesis is a South Korean luxury automaker that was spun off as its own brand in 2015. Hyundai previously sold two models called the Genesis and Equus, which were renamed and sold under the new Genesis brand as the G80 and G90, respectively. The brand now sells six different models, most of which are available with fully electric powertrains.

What Will Genesis Do With Lucid Motors?

Genesis has already been very successful in developing its own in-house electric motors, so why does it suddenly need Lucid’s help? Lucid’s electric motors are known for being incredibly powerful, compact, and efficient, hence why the Lucid Air Grand Touring has the longest range of any EV in North America at 516 miles. The motors will reportedly go into a production version of the Genesis X Concept, a stunning electric convertible that was first previewed at the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The Genesis X is expected to go on sale in 2026, giving a limited amount of time to engineer the car with the Lucid powertrain. “Hyundai Motor Company’s application of Lucid’s high-performance electric motors is relatively efficient in terms of time and cost,” SJ says. It also adds that Genesis is still “ironing out details such as the pricing of the electric motors and the specific models they will be integrated into,” meaning more models could be powered by Lucid.

    Other Lucid Collaborations

Though nothing has been officially confirmed between Genesis and Lucid, this collaboration makes sense based on what the latter has stated recently. Lucid recently signed a deal with Aston Martin to supply electric motors, and CEO Peter Rawlinson said he’d like to work with more automakers in the future. The Genesis X may not be the mass market application Rawlinson had in mind when he made that statement, but it could be higher production than a company like Aston Martin.

Given that Aston Martin announced its partnership with Lucid long before the former was ready to reveal its first EV, we imagine a similar timeline could follow with Genesis. The South Korean automaker could announce the Lucid deal in a teaser for the Genesis X before the final car is shown.
