The 2024 Ford Mustang GT boasts V8 power and updated looks. However, it has a handful of pain points drivers are discovering already.

    Published on December 11, 2023

The 2024 Ford Mustang GT managed to do what the Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Camaro couldn’t. The V8-powered pony car lives on into its seventh generation, a feat that its closest muscle car rivals can’t boast. However, it’s not all good news for the latest Blue Oval sports car; the Mustang has a few issues.

What’s wrong with the new Mustang GT?

The 2024 Ford Mustang GT is the last remaining V8-powered pony car on the market. However, its solitary status in the segment doesn’t make it faultless. For instance, the reviewers at Throttle House point out that the Mustang’s steering isn’t communicative; the Mustang doesn’t inspire confidence when attempting surgical cornering.

What’s more, the radically updated interior drops the ball in a few capacities. For starters, drivers who don’t opt for the Mustang’s 13.2-inch infotainment screen will notice that the individual screens look just that: disconnected. Further, reviewers note that the SYNC 4 system can be laggy. However, historic Mustang fans will be the most disappointed with the loss of the double-brow dash, one of the nameplate’s classic features.

Of course, the 2024 Ford Mustang GT’s most significant issue is its manual transmission. Specifically, the Getrag MT82 six-speed manual in the GT has a reputation for premature wear and failure. However, the Mustang lineup does have a solution: the track-ready Dark Horse carries the TREMEC TR-3160 over from the now-discontinued Mach 1.

Is the 2024 Mustang better than the 2023 model?

While the 2024 Ford Mustang doesn’t solve all of the 2023 Mustang’s issues, it’s an objective improvement. To start, the latest Ford Mustang outmuscles its predecessor. The GT bumps horsepower output to 486 (with the performance exhaust), 36 more than the 2023 model.

However, the 2024 Ford Mustang rides on the same chassis as the previous iteration. Fundamentally, the latest Blue Oval pony car isn’t all that different from the S550 model, save for surface-level updates like screens and dual throttle bodies. It’s newer, sure. It definitely looks different. But it’s not too much better.

How much will the 2024 Mustang GT cost?

In addition to some of the new Mustang’s foibles, the model gets a cost increase across the lineup.

    S650 Mustang Trim Starting price
    EcoBoost $32,515
    EcoBoost Premium Convertible $43,540
    GT $43,090
    GT Premium Convertible $53,110
    Dark Horse $60,865
