The new Raption generation of high-power electric car chargers surpasses its predecessor products, the Raption 150 Compact and Raption 200. With 160 kW and 240 kW, respectively, improvements have been made in terms of charging power, but also in terms of equipment and user-friendliness. What still remains open, is the price.

Circontrol presented the Raption Compact 160 at this year’s Power2Drive, an international trade fair for charging infrastructure and electromobility in Munich, Germany. As the name suggests, the High Power Charger offers a maximum charging capacity of up to 160 kW per charging point. The Spanish company has set the maximum amperage at 375 amps.

The Raption Compact 160 can be configured with two CCS connections or one CCS and one CHAdeMO connection. The maximum 160 kW is only possible with CCS, while CHAdeMO is limited to 100 kW (200 amps). If two electric cars are charging simultaneously, the charging power is divided equally (80 kW per charging point).

The new charging column is supported by OCPP 1.6J protocol and OCPP 2.0 ready. Wireless communication is possible via 4G/LTE, WiFi hotspot, GPRS and GSM. Below the 15-inch touchscreen, the charging station can also be equipped with an RFID card reader for contactless payment methods. Circontrol also offers credit card payment, including a pin pad for the Raption Compact 160, to name just a few technical specifications.

The fast charger has a width of 1.14 meters, a depth of 0.55 meters and a height of 1.91 meters. The cable lengths are four meters (CCS) and 3.5 meters (CHAdeMO). Optional lengths of up to 5.5 meters are possible. To improve the handling of the cables, Circontrol also offers a cable management system.

Raption Compact 240 complements the Raption series

A new addition is the aforementioned Raption Compact 240 charging station. Here, too, the name indicates the maximum charging power, which is up to 240 kW in this case. The maximum current for this model is up to 500 amps.

Like the Raption Compact 160, the Raption Compact 240 can be configured with two CCS connections or one CCS and one CHAdeMO connection. The maximum 240 kW is only possible with CCS, while CHAdeMO is limited to 100 kW (200 amps). If two electric cars are charging simultaneously, the charging power is divided equally (up to 120 kW per charging point).

Both charging stations have similar technical data: this high-power charger from the Raption series also supports the OCPP 1.6J protocol and is also OCPP 2.0 ready. Wireless communication is possible via 4G/LTE, WiFi hotspot, GPRS and GSM. An RFID card reader can also be attached for common contactless payment methods. Circontrol also offers payment by credit card, including pin pad. As with the smaller version from the Raption series, operators can opt for a 15-inch touchscreen.

The Raption Compact 240 has a width of around 1.24 meters, a depth of 0.65 meters and a height of 1.91 meters. The cable lengths for this fast charger are also four meters (CCS) and 3.5 meters (CHAdeMO). Optional lengths of up to 5.5 meters are possible. Circontrol offers a cable management system to enable better handling of the cables.

What both fast chargers have in common is that Circontrol offers an optional direct current meter in markets where this is required, even though the Spanish company does not explicitly mention the terms calibration or law-compliant in its announcement of the chargers, but the charging stations in the Raption series may indeed meet this requirement. After all, Circontrol received certification for German calibration law from the VDE last spring.

In addition to the direct current meter, however, there have been further optimizations: According to the Spanish charging station manufacturer, the HPCs have been “equipped with a number of improvements to meet the specific requirements of legislation in various countries”. In accordance with European standards, for example, the displays and the holders for the plugs have been moved to a lower position to make it easier for physically impaired people to use them.

The two fast chargers are not the end of the story. Circontrol is already working on another DC dual-charging product, which will be launched on the market in early 2024.
