Tesla has introduced a new Universal Wall Connector charger that accommodates both Tesla and non-Tesla electric vehicles.
The automaker says its new addition is an excellent addition to public charging spaces, such as apartment blocks, workplaces, and hotels, as it allows anyone – from Tesla Model 3 to Volkswagen ID.4 owners – to top up their batteries with ease, thanks to an integrated J1772 adapter.
EV owners can expect to add 44 miles of range per hour, thanks to an 11.5-kilowatt/46-amp output. So how does it work? Thanks to the YouTube channel State of Charge, we’ve been given an in-depth explainer of the new Universal Wall Connector.
It’s rather clever. The adapter is fitted to the charger itself. If you need to charge a non-Tesla vehicle, a button releases both the adapter and the charger, allowing you to plug in easily.
