Love it or hate it, GM’s decision to cease production of the Camaro has been fulfilled. The iconic muscle car will always hold a special place in the history of the automobile and the hearts of enthusiasts. As its swan song, the Camaro was offered as a limited production Collector’s Edition and an even rarer Garage 56 Edition. Both models were a good way to bid farewell to Chevrolet’s legendary car, but Hendrick Motorsports went a step further and is offering a limited-production Camaro to celebrate the organization’s four decades of success.
The Camaro made a name for itself on the race track, and it would seem only fitting for GM to offer a track-oriented car as a last performance. Short of building a track-only Z28, a special SS 1LE would possibly be the next best thing. It turns out that Hendrick Motorsports is producing such a beast, and they are only building 40 of these Camaros to commemorate Hendrick’ 40th anniversary.
Established in 1984, Hendrick Motorsports has created a storied legacy and has won a record 14 car-owner NASCAR championships. Hendrick operates four full-time Chevrolet teams in the NASCAR Cup Series. So building these commemorative Camaros means something special to the organization.
Each of the 40 Hendrick Motorsports 40th Anniversary Edition Camaros will be draped in the Radiant Red Tintcoat color and adorned with a custom matte black graphics package and unique 40th-anniversary badging. Although the exact trim level has not been confirmed, judging by the images these special Camaros will be track-oriented SS 1LE models. Each car produced will feature a steering wheel badge and a number plate under the front headlight that distinguishes which car number of the 40 built it is. The headrests are also embroidered with the 40th-anniversary logo as an additional custom touch.
At the time of this writing pricing for these rare Camaros is unavailable and there has been no confirmation of when production of the commemorative edition cars will begin. For now, we can only drool over these images and wait patiently.
