The 2024 Ford Mustang GT is a powerful, capable pony car. However, its six-speed manual transmission leaves much to be desired.

    Published on December 4, 2023

The 2024 Ford Mustang GT is the most powerful GT the Blue Oval has ever produced. What’s more, the V8-powered pony car is available with a manual transmission in a landscape of dwindling stick-shift options. However, there is an issue with the Mustang’s six-speed manual transmission, namely a Getrag-sourced MT82 with a problematic reputation.

The Getrag MT82 could be the 2024 Ford Mustang GT’s weak point

Ford has been putting the Getrag MT82 six-speed manual transmission in its Mustang lineup for years. While Mustang fans are excited about the return of the nameplate for its seventh generation, the MT82’s return in the GT could be problematic.

In its time with the Ford Mustang, the Getrag-sourced transmission has exhibited grinding, shifting issues, and premature wear. In fact, the transmission was the source of a lawsuit. Mustang owners cited early wear and catastrophic failures in the MT82 and MT82-D4. Unfortunately, the cost-saving transmission is back. What’s more, EcoBoost owners will be unable to opt for the rowable unit. Instead, the EcoBoost will pack the 10-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment.

The news is better for the 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse

Fortunately, the Coyote-powered 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse ditches the MT82 in favor of a different unit. Specifically, the new noir pony car gets the same notchy TREMEC TR-3160 six-speed in lieu of the Getrag unit. It makes sense; the TREMEC transmission resided in the previous generation Mach 1, the spiritual predecessor to the Dark Horse.

Of course, the Dark Horse also offers the quick-shifting 10-speed automatic. However, while the auto will return sub-four-second sprints to 60 mph, it loses something. The Dark Horse is one of the last opportunities Mustang maniacs have to enjoy a V8-powered, rear-wheel drive (RWD), performance-oriented ‘Stang before the model undergoes fundamental change.
