Kansas City Chief Travis Kelce and singer/songwriter Taylor Swift were seen riding off into the sunset in his 1970 Chevelle SS after a Kansas City Chiefs game. Now people want more information on that convertible. Here’s what we know.
Everyone wants more details about the two-time SuperBowl champion Travis Kelce as the world focuses on the courtship of the Kansas City Chief tight end and singer-songwriter Taylor Swift. Besides his stylish wardrobe that boasts over 400 sneakers and that hosting gig on Saturday Night Live in March 2023, muscle car enthusiasts, Swifties, and others want to know about that Black Cherry 1970 Chevelle SS convertible in which Kelce and Swift sped off to explore the streets of Kansas City, Missouri, after his lopsided win at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday, September 24.
How rare is Travis Kelce’s 1970 Chevelle SS?
What is that car? Fans and media gushed about the whole scene so uncharacteristic of the singer, comparing it to Swift’s song, “Getaway Car,” with the superstar herself riding shotgun to Kelce behind the wheel, seemingly having their best day ever. We know plenty about Kelce and Taylor; we really want more details about that American muscle car.
In the hierarchy of Chevelles and SS models, the 1970 version is the one plus ultra of classic muscle cars. As a convertible, it bests pedestrian coupes, with only 1,100 made. Chevrolet started cranking out this popular model in 1964 when the Chevelle nameplate debuted and lasted through 1973.
What’s modified on Travis Kelce’s 1970 Chevelle SS?
All the chrome and stainless now carry a black chrome finish, which also goes for the 20-inch custom wheels. They match well with the black interior and top. Those tires are some big hoops, which we’ll guess are 335/25/20-inchers. It all fits nicely into the Pro Mod formula. Though we can’t confirm, we’d assume that under the hood is an LS engine swap.
Kelce is a bonafide car guy, owning more interesting vehicles than his Chevelle. But you can tell he loves it, “That thing sounds so mean coming around the corner, and it looks sweet,” he says. In September 2023, he held the first-ever Kelce Car Jam, a charity event for his Eighty-Seven & Running foundation.
Does Travis Kelce own other SS Chevelles?
Besides 87 & Running, Kelce helps fund the Operation Breakthrough Ignition Lab, a collaborative learning experience helping over 700 youth living in poverty in the Kansas City area. The Ignition Lab portion of Operation Breakthrough is currently converting a 1969 Chevelle SS to electric power. There’s something about Kelce and SS Chevelles…
The tight end has kept a pretty tight lid on the details of his Chevelle regarding who built it, what’s under the hood, and so forth. But football fans and Swifties don’t care. It’s more about these two famous and talented lovebirds and images of them inside the convertible with the top down driving into the sunset after a 41-to-10 slaughter of the Chicago Bears.
Would Kelce be less recognizable driving a Kia?
If the Chevelle starts to become too recognizable around town–the paparazzi caught Kelce smoking and texting while driving it on his birthday–he might want to consider adding a couple more muscle cars to his collection. Since he’s a big guy–6’5”–something like a 1971 Plymouth ‘Cuda convertible with a four-speed manual Hemi or a 1970 Ford Torino coupe would offer him plenty of headroom and torque. You know, for when she’s riding shotgun with her “hair undone in the front seat of his car,” as Swift sings in “Our Song,” adding, “he’s got a one-hand feel on the steering wheel.”
